On July 30, the Patriarchal Exarch of Southeast Asia visited the newly established parish in the Indonesian city of Semarang. The parish is dedicated to the Holy Chief Apostles Peter and Paul.
The community warmly welcomed Metropolitan Sergius. He conducted a moleben (a prayer service) and engaged in discussions with the faithful. During the conversation, plans were outlined for the further development of a full-fledged parish life. Additionally, Metropolitan Sergius gifted the community an icon of the Savior, as reported by the Exarchate's Telegram channel.
Semarang is located on the northern coast of the island of Java and serves as the administrative center of Central Java Province. In addition to the Peter and Paul Parish in Semarang, there are two other Russian Orthodox communities in this part of the country: the Apostle James Parish in Kaliwungu and the Meeting of the Lord Parish in Surakarta.
The territory of Indonesia falls under the jurisdiction of the Singapore Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church. The first Russian parishes in the country began to appear in the 1920s. According to the Patriarchal Exarchate of Southeast Asia, Indonesia has become one of the centers of Russian Orthodox presence in the region over the past few decades. The country is home to 25 parishes, served by 40 clergy members, including readers, most of whom are citizens of the Republic of Indonesia.
