During an official visit to Serbia, Coptic Orthodox Patriarch Tawadros II delivered a powerful lecture titled “Bridges of Love” at the Palace of Serbia, calling for deeper interchurch and international dialogue based on Christian love, forgiveness, and shared service to humanity.
The event was attended by Serbian Prime Minister Djuro Macut, Serbian Patriarch Porfirije, representatives of various faiths, diplomats, and public figures. In his address, Patriarch Tawadros emphasized that «true love is not proven in times of peace, but in building bridges after conflict,» citing South Africa’s post-apartheid reconciliation and Rwanda’s recovery following the 1994 genocide as examples.
The Coptic patriarch stressed the vital role of religious leaders in today’s world, which is plagued by war, crisis, and moral instability. «Bridges of love,» he said, «are not only spiritual ties between God and humanity, but also concrete efforts in education, cooperation, and reconciliation among nations.»
«We must build bridges that connect, not walls that divide,» he declared, recalling a time of persecution for the Coptic Church in Egypt with the words: «Better a homeland without churches than a church without a homeland.» These words, he noted, underscore the priority of love for one’s neighbor and country over outward forms.
Tawadros also highlighted the work of international humanitarian organizations, describing them as playing a crucial role in improving the lives of millions, especially in areas affected by natural disasters, conflict, and economic hardship.
Addressing global challenges such as climate change, armed conflict, and deepening social divisions, the Patriarch called for bold leadership and new strategies for peace and justice. Quoting the Apostle John, he concluded: «Let us love not in word or tongue, but in deed and truth.»
His closing appeal urged leaders of all faiths and nations to unite for the common good and the future of the next generations, reminding the audience that Christians are called to be «the light of the world,» especially in times of darkness.
