His Holiness Ilia II, Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, addressed the faithful on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the victory over fascism in World War II, calling the date a powerful symbol of heroism, sacrifice, and the triumph of good over evil.

The Patriarch’s message, published on the official website of the Georgian Orthodox Church, reflected on the immense human cost of the war, emphasizing the courage and endurance of millions who resisted fascism. He also acknowledged divine assistance in achieving victory.

“Victory was achieved through the steadfastness of countless people and the grace of God,” Ilia II wrote, noting that more than 61 million lives were lost in the war, including over 300,000 from Georgia alone. Entire towns, villages, churches, and cultural monuments were destroyed, he added.

The Patriarch urged remembrance of these sacrifices and a renewed commitment to peace, particularly in light of contemporary global challenges. He drew a parallel between the victory commemorations and the founding of the European Union, which was established in the aftermath of the war to promote peace and unity across the continent.

Citing Romans 14:19 — “Let us therefore pursue what leads to peace and to mutual edification” — Ilia II concluded his message with a blessing for Georgia and the world, encouraging all people to strive for harmony and mutual upliftment.
