The Patriarch of Bulgaria, Daniil, has expressed concern over the escalating situation in the Middle East and reaffirmed his support for the Jerusalem Church during a recent telephone conversation with Patriarch Theophilos III of Jerusalem.

According to a statement from the Bulgarian Patriarchate, Patriarch Daniil highlighted alarming reports of continued hostilities in the region, as well as restrictions affecting worshippers’ access to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. He assured his counterpart of Bulgaria’s spiritual solidarity and ongoing prayers for peace.

In response, Patriarch Theophilos III provided an update on the current situation in Jerusalem. He emphasized that liturgical services during Holy Week and Easter are expected to continue despite the challenges. He also noted that representatives of local Orthodox Churches are anticipated to participate in the traditional Holy Fire ceremony.

Patriarch Daniil referred to the Jerusalem Patriarchate as the “Mother of Churches,” underscoring its spiritual significance, and expressed solidarity with believers facing hardship. He added that the Bulgarian people are praying daily for peace in the region and for all those affected by the conflict.

The two church leaders exchanged wishes for peace and expressed hope for a safe and meaningful celebration of Easter.

Tensions in Jerusalem remain high amid the broader regional conflict. Israeli authorities have announced that Easter events will be held in a limited format due to security concerns. Access to holy sites in the Old City has been restricted for pilgrims and tourists, and attendance at religious ceremonies is expected to be capped.

Despite these limitations, the Jerusalem Patriarchate has stressed that services at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre are continuing in accordance with ecclesiastical tradition. On March 29, 2026, Metropolitan Isychios of Capitolias presided over a nighttime liturgy, during which a new hierodeacon was ordained.
