Anti-sodomy laws, recently enacted by the Russian Legislature, cause ire from the liberals in the West, making them accuse us of suppressing personal liberties. By no coincidence, Patriarch Kirill has referred to the same issue in his major public speech.

Addressing to a large audience at the opening of the annual Christmas Educational Conference in the Moscow Kremlin, Patriarch Kirill, the Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church, focused on traditional Christian values being rapidly dismantled by the ruling elites of the once-Christian European and American nations. Most importantly, this process is related to the institution of family:

The defense of traditional moral principles is organically linked to the need to support the family. The forces of evil are aiming at the family,at the destruction of traditional family values. This is evident, first and foremost, from the content of movies and television programs transmitted toward Russia by other countries. 

Should this attack go unnoticed by the Russian society? Should we accept it as is? - No, says the Head of the Russian Church:

It is with great joy that I would like to note that the defense of the family is now given great attention by the Russian government... Russia has recently adopted laws banning the promotion of sexual serversins, including paedophilia, in public space.

This legislative initiative has long been advocated by the Russian Church, by all traditional religious confessions in this country, by public interest groups. Its adoption, hampered by the influence from abroad, has been triggered by the recent wave of animosity and Russophobia on the part of the Western “partners”:

What a furious outlash we have met with on this account! And that’s in spite of the fact that the law passed in Russia does not discriminate against anyone, does not limit anyone's freedom, but curbs the influence of perverted sexual practices on our population, in particular on children and youth... And what has been the response? Accusations of Russia violating human rights, freedom, and so on. 

The Patriarch went on to show the scope of the problem and encourage everyone willing to say on the side of the truth:

This conversation with our Western partners alone attests to what is happening in the world in terms of a clash of different values, different worldviews. And in a sense, Russia is becoming more and more like an island of freedom, because we uphold values that ensure personal freedom from slavery. And if we encounter anger, criticism and misunderstanding, it is not due to our weakness or our mistakes;  it is a symptom of the malady that upsets mankind today.
