At a solemn service marking Lazarus Saturday, Metropolitan Joanikije of Montenegro and the Littoral delivered a message on the spiritual significance of the biblical event, emphasizing its central role in understanding Christian salvation.
The liturgy was held at the historic Peć Patriarchate, one of the most important spiritual centers of the Serbian Orthodox Church, located in Kosovo. Founded in the 13th century, the monastery served for centuries as the seat of Serbian patriarchs. Today, it is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and remains a major place of pilgrimage for Orthodox believers.
In his sermon, Metropolitan Joanikije reflected on the meaning of the Raising of Lazarus, a feast observed on the eve of Palm Sunday. He described the event as a profound revelation that helps believers grasp the essence of the Christian faith.
“By celebrating the raising of Lazarus, we anticipate the mystery of Christ’s work of salvation,” the metropolitan said.
He noted that the Gospel miracle symbolizes the triumph of life over death and strengthens faith in the days leading up to Easter. “Christ showed that He is the resurrection and the life,” Joanikije подчеркнул, adding that this event prepared Christ’s disciples for His forthcoming suffering and resurrection.
The metropolitan also stressed that, despite human weakness and fear, Christ “descends to humanity and grants forgiveness,” opening the way to new life.
Concluding his sermon, Joanikije called on the faithful to pray for one another, support each other, and preserve unity within the Church. “Let us pray for one another and ask God for love and help in overcoming all trials,” he said.
