September 24th marks World Maritime Day. This annual celebration was established by the International Maritime Organization back in 1978, as a tribute to seamen and seamanship, which is one of the most demanding, most dangerous, and most important occupations available to mankind.

The Russian Orthodox Church has always been extending her pastoral care and prayer to sailors of both the Navy and merchant ships, appealing particularly to the intercession of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, who is renowned for the miraculous salvation of seamen nearly perishing in high seas.

The Imperial Capital city of Russia has two Maritime Cathedrals dedicated to St. Nicholas: one on the mainland, the other in Kronstadt, on the island near St. Petersburg harbor. The latter town is known all over the world, thanks to St. John of Kronstadt, a famous Russian Saint of late XIX – XX century.

Today, the Maritime Cathedral of St. Nicholas in Kronstadt is the main church of the modern Russian Navy. An exhibition opened there recently, dedicated to the memory of Prince St. Alexander, whose 800th anniversary is celebrated this year. Prince St. Alexander received his nickname “Nevsky” for his victory over the invading Swedes at the Neva river, on the site of future city of St. Petersburg.
