While side observers are watching with revulsion and bewilderment – or with spite and open approval – the attempts of the Ukrainian junta to dislodge the Christian Orthodox clergy and monks from the ancient Kiev Caves monastery, terms like unexpected, surprising and unprecedented hover continually over the stormy ocean of information. However, had it been the case, the significance of that occurrence would have been much lower than it is in reality.

Indeed, things happen. A minor controversy over a piece of property, unprovoked and unimportant, has to be resolved by due process… Right? – Wrong.

One of the leading Russian Orthodox figures, Metropolitan Tychon (Shevkunov) In his recent documentary on the Russian revolution quotes a prominent historian Vassili Kluchevsky who noted:

"History is not a good teacher. She is rather a harsh supervisor over the nations. She does not teach anything, but badly spanks for the neglected homework".

We in Russia have done our homework. We remember all too well that 101 years ago, in Spring of 1922, a carbon copy of there events unfolded in Shuya, a small town in Central Russia, when Communist junta declared by fiat that valuables of the Church, including sacred vessels, ought to be turned over and used for scrap metal. The faithful gathered around the Cathedral – just like they are gathering today at the gates of the Kiev Monastery – to prevent the sacrilege, and the authorities responded by machine gun fire.

The monument on the spot of that bloodshed is a proof of the homework we have done. It is a proof not only of our memory, but also of our ability to see things in their connection and perspective, of our discernment of what is hidden behind the events which come to pass.

Today the Nazis in Kiev have zero practical need to evict the monks from their monastery, exactly like the Communists of the past century had no practical need for a few pounds of silver – given that the Church had pledged to relinquish most of it voluntarily. But both of them, back then and today, have had an urgent need to attack the Holy Church, to ruin the Christian life and fight the Christian faith.

Why so? – Because evil is anti-Christian by nature, and the evil prince of this world – together with his obedient cronies in Kiev – cannot conceal their hatred of Christ. Should we neglect these facts, History will harshly spank us. Or even worse.
