Representatives from Christian churches within the Christian Inter-Confessional Advisory Committee (CICA) have released a joint statement regarding ongoing violations of Christians' rights in various countries. The statement, published on the committee's official website, highlights increasing pressure on Christian communities, clergy, and laity, including government interference in church affairs, restrictions on freedom of conscience, and direct acts of persecution.
The CICA expressed particular concern over the situations in Ukraine, Armenia, Estonia, Moldova, and other nations. They noted that state pressure continues on the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, which faces temple seizures, discriminatory laws, and the persecution of clergy and believers.
In Armenia, there has been heightened scrutiny of the Armenian Apostolic Church, marked by the arrest of church hierarchs and attempts at political interference in internal church matters. Estonia's newly adopted church law, which affects the internal affairs of the Estonian Orthodox Christian Church, also raises alarms, particularly with the expulsion of Metropolitan Eugene of Tallinn and All Estonia, seen as a violation of religious freedom principles.
CICA representatives pointed out increasing administrative and judicial pressure on the Orthodox Church of Moldova, citing property disputes and legal actions against clergy and congregants. The statement emphasized that Christian churches are called to promote peace and love, and using religion for political ends leads to deepening divisions and conflicts.
The committee members expressed solidarity with persecuted believers and urged the international community to pay attention to these issues and work towards protecting fundamental human rights and freedom of religion. The document was signed by representatives of Orthodox, Catholic, and Protestant churches, including Metropolitan Anthony of Volokolamsk and Archbishop Ezra Nersisyan.
Founded in 1996, the Christian Inter-Confessional Advisory Committee unites churches from the CIS and Baltic states, serving as a platform for dialogue among various Christian confessions and regularly addressing issues related to the protection of believers' rights and the preservation of traditional Christian values.
