This week in the Russian Orthodox Church marked the celebration of the Presentation of the Lord. In Russia, it is also observed as the Day of Orthodox Youth. Minsk welcomed a great holy relic – a particle of the belt of the Most Holy Theotokos. Metropolitan Benjamin of Minsk and Zaslavl led the reception of the ark, containing a particle of the Honorable Belt of the Most Holy Theotokos and particles of the relics of her parents, the righteous Joachim and Anna, installed in the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit. The relic was brought from St. Petersburg.
Greece witnessed ongoing debates on the legalization of same-sex marriages. A mass protest against the legalization of same-sex marriages and their adoption of children took place in central Athens. Clergymen participated in the action, holding Greek flags, icons, crosses, and placards. The Athonite monasteries also spoke out against the legalization of gay marriages, stating that the legislation, seeking to protect equality through same-sex marriages, violates fundamental principles of human existence and harms the possibility of a child's normal development.
Metropolitan Pavel of Khanty-Mansiysk and Surgut visited the Philippines and Vietnam on a pastoral visit. Church agricultural projects are being developed in Africa with the help of Russia. The charitable foundation "Country for Children" allocated funds for the creation of a farm for growing agricultural crops in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Patriarchal Exarchate of Africa is participating in the project.
The foundation stone for the Russian Orthodox Church dedicated to St. Mary of Egypt was laid in Kenya in the village of Ramula (Kakamega deanery). Additionally, plans include opening an orphanage in the village, as reported by the Patriarchal Exarchate of Africa.
In the Arkhangelsk region, the prosecutor intervened in the fate of a collapsed church. The prosecutor's office, through the court, is demanding the preservation of the church of Vasily the Blessed in the village of Chukcheryma, built in 1824. Six months ago, the roof of the building collapsed, and now the court has recognized the inaction of the Federal Property Management Agency as illegal, assigning it the obligation to organize and carry out the restoration of the church.
Another escalation occurred this week in Kosovo. Bishop Theodosius, head of the Serbian Church's diocese of Raska-Prizren, addressed the Kosovo Serbs with a message of support, urging them "not to respond with hatred and violence to hatred." The situation in Kosovo intensified due to the introduction of the euro and the cancellation of the use of the Serbian dinar in regions where the majority of the population is Serbian. The diocese protested against this economic policy, leading to a special session of the UN Security Council for discussion. Many people are now on the brink of survival due to problems with pensions and social benefits.
