On Thursday, August 28, the administration of the Finnish Orthodox Church (FPC) published a statement regarding the government's proposal to cut state subsidies by €200,000 annually in 2026 and 2027. The FPC argues that such a decision would be disproportionate and negatively impact the church's ability to fulfill its core functions, including spiritual service, educational work, and social assistance.

The FPC points out that state subsidies account for about one-third of its income and are used to support diocesan offices, the Theological Seminary, and cultural-historical sites. The proposed cuts threaten to limit the parishes' ability to provide social assistance, engage in educational activities, and preserve unique cultural heritage.

Additionally, the church notes that the reduction in financial support affects not only Orthodox parishes. Overall, state subsidies for social welfare and healthcare organizations in Finland will be reduced by more than one-third from 2024 to 2027, which experts believe will weaken their capacity to assist vulnerable populations. The government has, however, rejected more drastic proposals for additional cuts, including a €100 million reduction, to avoid undermining the operations of these organizations.

Other Christian Churches have also reacted critically to the government's proposal. For instance, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland stated that shifting funding for social functions to parishes places an excessive burden on congregants and could lead to increased funeral costs, adversely affecting low-income families.

Thus, the financial pressure impacts all religious and social structures in the country. However, the FPC emphasizes the particular importance of maintaining its unity and administrative autonomy for the benefit of the entire Finnish public. The church is open to dialogue with the government to seek balanced solutions and preserve its mission in society.
