The Holy Great Martyr George the Victorious is one of the most revered Christian saints, whose name is associated with courage, faith and spiritual victory. He was born around 280 in Cappadocia into a noble family.: His father, who later converted to Christianity, suffered for his faith, and his mother raised George in Christian traditions.
From a young age, George was distinguished by strength, intelligence and bravery. After joining the military, he quickly made a career and became a confidant of Emperor Diocletian. However, when the brutal persecution of Christians began, George openly opposed the imperial policy. He distributed his possessions to the poor, released his slaves, and publicly professed the Christian faith.
For this, the saint was subjected to severe torments: he was tortured, imprisoned, and tortured, but he remained adamant. In 303, in the city of Nicomedia, George was executed — his head was cut off. Thus he became one of the greatest martyrs of early Christianity.
For his steadfastness and spiritual victory, the saint is called the Victorious One. His relics were buried in the Palestinian city of Lydda, and his memory spread throughout the Christian world.
A special place in the folk tradition is occupied by the image of George striking a snake. According to legend, the saint saved a girl from a monster and thus saved the inhabitants of the city from fear and death. This plot has become a symbol of the victory of good over evil and is widely reflected in iconography.
In Russia, George was revered as the patron saint of warriors and protector from disasters. His image was included in the coat of arms of Moscow, and Memorial Day — St. George's Day — was associated with important folk traditions and way of life.
