The Monk Moses lived in the IV century. Originally from Ethiopia, a slave of a noble man, who was expelled by him for bad behavior, he did not want to spend his life in honest work, but became the leader of robbers. The robber Moses spent several years in such a sinful life, but by the great mercy of God he repented, left the band of robbers and went to one of the deserted monasteries and zealously fulfilled all monastic obediences here.
But it was not soon that the memories of the former depraved life left the former robber. His prodigal passion was especially strong. On the advice of an elder, the Monk Moses exhausted his flesh with intense fasting, incessant feats of prayer; for six years he stood idle in prayer for whole nights, almost without closing his eyes. But even such intense prayers could not subdue his carnal desires. Finally, the Monk Moses found a means to overcome the temptations of the enemy. Still humbling his flesh with his exploits, he went around the hermits at night, collected empty water carriers and, filling them with water, placed them at the entrance to the cells. From that time on, calmness, sobriety of thought and complete alienation of carnal desires were established in the soul of the Monk Moses.
Spending many years in monastic labors, the Monk Moses was ordained deacon, then presbyter, in whose rank he labored for 15 years and gathered 75 disciples around him. When the monk turned 75 years old, he warned his monks that robbers would soon attack the monastery and kill all the inhabitants. The saint blessed the monks to leave in advance in order to avoid violent death. The disciples began to ask the monk to leave with them, but he replied: "For many years I have been waiting for the time when the word of my Lord, the Lord Jesus Christ, who said, will be fulfilled on me: "All who receive a knife will perish with a knife" (Matthew 26:52)." The attacking robbers killed the Monk Moses and the six monks who remained with him (+ 400).
