“I’m oversensitive. I wish I wasn’t, but sometimes, that feeling overwhelms me…”

How often do we, as believers, speak words like this, openly acknowledging our sins? And when? With whom? Only at confession?

Sometimes, we admit such things in casual conversations with friends. Have you ever wondered why? I’ve thought about it myself, and it leaves me uneasy.

Christ bore the punishment and died to put our sins to death along with His flesh. What remains for us is simple: to go to confession and repent. God will forgive us; we know this. Acknowledge the sin, and forgiveness follows.

But there’s another side to it.

I am forgiven. Sin exists. So what? We humans are flawed. By saying this out loud, it’s as though I’m defending my right to be imperfect. After all, I’m owning up to it! But in public conversations, sin doesn’t get absolved.

So, is it truly appropriate to discuss our flaws? We’re used to concealing our faults or even justifying them. As believers, we understand that self-justification is wrong.

And is it right to feel no shame about our weaknesses? God has forgiven us; He has borne the burden. But I, too, must run from sin, waging a lifelong battle against it, even knowing that I may never conquer it fully.

A priest once said that what truly matters is not our level of spiritual growth when death finds us, but the direction of our soul’s movement—toward God or away from Him. This means we should have a direction, not merely a sense of despair at being “at the bottom.” And even less so, should we make public announcements of this sad state.

In my heart, I am not boasting of sin; I marvel at Christ and His mercy! But let this remain part of the sacred relationship between us and Him.

Outwardly, sins and passions are like dirt on the soul. And, by treating them as a given in casual conversation, I might only disturb those who listen. Perhaps it’s best left unspoken.
