Acts 9:20-31; Jn. 15:17-16:2

When St. Paul began to preach in Damascus, “all that heard him were amazed, and said: Is not this he that destroyed them which called on this Name?” [Acts 9:21].  The same happens to anyone who converts from faithlessness to faith, from sin to virtue; all those around him would wonder: what’s the matter with this man?  He was just like us, and now suddenly everything is upside down: he speaks, and looks, and walks and thinks differently, he does different things and goes to different places.  It is like someone walking west suddenly turning around to the east.

These two ways of life are opposite and mutually exclusive.  If anyone decided to follow them both, or to live a life partially by one and partially by the other, that would be a waste of time and effort, a total failure.  They have nothing in common; only someone slow-witted might complain:  “Why go for such extremes?...
