No Liturgy ─ no New Testament reading appointed

When Moses and Aaron pleaded before the Pharaoh to let their people go, he responded by increasing the workload of the oppressed Jews, so that they even complained to their intercessors: “Ye have made our savour to be abhorred in the eyes of Pharaoh” [Ex. 5:21].

The same thing happens to the soul of a sinner in the process of repentance.  When his conscience together with the fear of God ─ these inner Aaron and Moses ─ inspire him towards raising up and shaking off the yoke of sinful slavery, then joy fills his soul all throughout.  But the enemy is on alert; he begins to mount mental obstacles before him, suggesting that his sin is far too strong to fight with, inducing all sort of false fears ─ for his well-being, social relations, health, even for his life.  And, as it happens, a sinner who has just set out for a journey to recovery, stops dead in the tracks.

Cheer up, my brother! “The Lord of hosts shall be exalted in judgment, and Holy God shall be sanctified in righteousness” [Is. 5:16]. God is stronger than the enemy.  Call unto Him ─ and you will hear just what Moses heard back then: “Now shalt thou see what I will do to Pharaoh”  [Ex. 6:1].

The enemy has no power over our souls: the only thing it can do is to scare us with phantoms.  Don’t cave in, hang in there, press on with courage, saying to yourself: “I will never quit, even unto death, I will follow the Lord with no fear in the spirit of repentance which is working in me right now”.
