“My spirit shall not always be scorned by man, for that he also is flesh” [Gen. 6:3].  Spirit and flesh are two opposites in a human being, but his consciousness, that is, personality, is one and unique.   Depending upon the leanings of the consciousness ─ either towards the spirit, or towards the flesh ─ a given person could be either spiritual or carnal.

Even in a carnal man the spirit does not disappear altogether, though it is enslaved and has no say whatsoever.  It becomes like an draft animal under a yoke; it serves as a slave, producing all kinds of pleasures for its master, the flesh.  And in a spiritual man the flesh does not disappear either; it is subordinate to the spirit and serves it, giving up its usual claims to food through fasting, to sleep through vigil, to rest through hard labor and weariness, to pleasant feelings through solitude and silence.

God does not come near to where flesh is in charge: God’s contact with man is through his spirit, and the spirit in such a person is out of its proper order.   For the first time he will feel God’s calling when his spirit begins to claim its rights in the voices of conscience and the fear of God.  And when a man finally makes his free deliberate choice for the spirit, then God will join that man and dwell in him.  From that moment on begins the conversion of his soul and body, the whole inner and outer man, until “God may be all in all” [1Cor. 15:28], and the man which once was carnal, transforms into a spiritual being, gets sanctified.

What a marvelous privilege of mankind, and how few of us know about it, appreciate and seek it!
