1Thes. 2:9-14; Lk. 11:14-23
“When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace: But when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him all his armour wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils”[Lk. 11:21-22]. This metaphor explains how the Lord liberates human soul from the demonic power.
As long as the soul remains in sin, an evil spirit is holding her firmly under control, even though it might not show its power openly. The devil is stronger than the soul; it has no fear of her uprising and dominates her completely, meeting with no resistance. But when the Lord descends into that soul, attracted by her faith and repentance, He breaks all demonic bonds, casts out the evil spirit and deprives it of any stake in that soul.
While the liberated soul remains in faithful submission to the Lord, devils cannot re-take her, for she is stronger than they, her strength coming directly from God. But if she falters and turns away from the Lord, they assail her again and take over, and now that miserable soul is worse off than she was in the first place.
Such is the universal order of things in the invisible world. If we could only have our spiritual eyes opened, we would have seen the battle between evil spirits and human souls in every place, at every moment. Either one or the other side has the upper hand, depending on whether people come to God in faith, repentance and resolve to do good, or, conversely, forsake Him in vanity, indifference and coldness to virtue.
